Feeling entirely neglectful of this website as I scramble on a few other projects (letters, restaurants, art) … and wake up extra early to get to work…

I can hardly believe it’s October, but am glad that it is. It is a month of two more weddings (two down), a trip to Maine, my birthday, apples, candy, changing leaves, earlier sunsets, late morning light, long shadows, and the full onset of Fall. On Sunday we drove to Philadelphia to shoot a wedding and leaves on the NJ Turnpike were starting to turn their oranges and yellows, a little red peaking in amidst the green. The light is lower and casts longer shadows, casts plants in the windowsills aglow with a halo.

Above: we stopped at Sesame Letterpress on Saturday as part of the DUMBO arts festival where I got some neat coasters. The exhibits and open houses were a little underwhelming–a lot of the art projects better in concept than exciting in actuality, but it was wonderful to be outside, lounging under a willow tree, between the bridges, eating indulgent Jacques Torres ice cream sandwiches before they melted down our hands. Friends sat in circles contemplating the festival, couples lay on each others’ stomachs, an old man tipped his fedora over his face to take a nap. A bunch of us wandered, examining the Brooklyn Bridge from separate angles, remarking on the view from the south and the north, points at which it’s obstructed and others where it’s not at all. We decided on a drive to Gravesend for pizza at the L & B Spumoni Gardens — thick crusted piping hot sicillian, salty, with a dusting of parmesan cheese — and sat outside at a picnic table families moving in fluorescent glow around us, old Italian men bickering, noise pervasive enough that if trying to hard to talk, we’d have struggled, but the cafeteria-like hum offered a pleasant buzz for worn, but hungry New Yorkers at the end of the day.

If I seem sentimental, maybe it’s the weather or the light of the day; maybe it’s because there are so few spare moments…but lately, even a slow walk to the subway on a pleasant morning becomes a real treat, the light shining on my basil plant when I wake up in the morning.

N.B.
1. This weekend, one of my favorite events of all time: Open House New York, Oct. 6 & 7 at various locations all over the city. I’ll be at various spots on Saturday, with an emphasis on the sustainability projects.
2. Also this weekend up in the Catskills (Cottekill) is this ceramics studio tour and sale (so lovely, can’t wait to see the pieces in person). We’ll be trekking up there on Sunday to see what we can grab and with fingers x’ed that foliage is nearing its peak.
3. In other news: design*sponge launched their redesign (looks amazing!), I found the house I want to buy and renovate, and if you’re waiting for your Modern Letter Project October address, I swear it is on the way!
